Devin has been described as state-of-the-art on the SWE-Bench coding benchmark and has demonstrated its capabilities by successfully passing practical engineering interviews from leading AI companies, completing real jobs on Upwork, and resolving 13.86% of GitHub issues found in real-world open-source projects autonomously. Unlike traditional coding assistants that focus on autocompleting tasks, Devin can autonomously write entire programs and apps, find bugs in production codebases, fine-tune AI models, and even train its own AI models. It has also been noted for its ability to tackle multi-hundred step tasks by balancing long-term planning, skills, and memory. This development is seen as a huge step towards the integration of AI software engineers in the workforce, with Devin capable of performing engineering tasks unassisted approximately five times better than previous autonomous software. The introduction of Devin by Cognition AI is being hailed as the beginning of a new era in software engineering, potentially replacing junior full-stack engineers and offering solutions at approximately 1% of the cost.
