Novak Djokovic launched his bid for a record-extending 25th Grand Slam crown by beating 19-year-old American wildcard Learner Tien 6-1, 7-6(3), 6-2 in the first round of the U.S. Open on Sunday night in New York. The seven-time champion in New York needed two hours 25 minutes to subdue the left-hander, shrugging off an early time-violation warning and pockets of uneven play in his first match since the Wimbledon semi-finals. The victory is Djokovic’s 75th consecutive first-round win at the majors, the longest such streak in the Open Era, and his 80th career triumph inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 38-year-old also improved to 19 straight years with at least one match win at Flushing Meadows, where he has not fallen before the third round since his tournament debut in 2005. Djokovic required on-court treatment for a blister on his right foot late in the second set but moved more freely thereafter, finishing with 33 winners against 18 unforced errors. He will meet world No. 145 Zachary Svajda of the United States in the second round as he continues his pursuit of a fifth U.S. Open title.
