Monica Seles, the former tennis star and nine-time Grand Slam singles champion, has publicly revealed that she has been living with myasthenia gravis, a rare neuromuscular autoimmune disease, for the past three years. In an interview with the Associated Press ahead of the US Open starting on August 24, 2025, Seles explained that the condition affects her daily life by impairing her vision and muscle strength. She experiences symptoms such as double vision (diplopia) and muscle weakness, which make routine tasks like drying her hair very difficult. The illness, classified as a designated rare disease by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, has prompted Seles to raise awareness about myasthenia gravis. Her openness aims to increase public understanding of this rare condition that currently has no cure.
