World No. 1 and defending champion Jannik Sinner needed just over two hours to defeat Australia’s Alexei Popyrin 6–3, 6–2, 6–2 in the US Open second round, booking a place in the last 32 against Canada’s Denis Shapovalov. The 24-year-old Italian has now won nine straight matches at Flushing Meadows and 23 in a row on hard-court majors, a run that spans his back-to-back Australian Open titles in 2024 and 2025. Sinner, who has taken 17 consecutive sets at hard-court majors, is aiming to become the first man since Federer (2004-08) to defend the US Open title.
