World No. 2 Iga Swiatek overcame a mid-match wobble to defeat the Netherlands’ Suzan Lamens 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 and reach the third round of the U.S. Open for the sixth straight year. The Pole notched her 51st win of the season and, remarkably, has now advanced to at least the last-32 at every Grand Slam held this decade. Defending men’s champion Jannik Sinner continued his relentless run by dismissing Australia’s Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. The Italian stretched his unbeaten streak at hard-court majors to 23 matches, equalled Roger Federer’s 41-9 record through 50 career matches on the surface and set up a third-round meeting with Canada’s Denis Shapovalov. Japan’s four-time major winner Naomi Osaka made light work of American qualifier Hailey Baptiste, prevailing 6-3, 6-1 to reach the U.S. Open third round for the first time since 2021. Earlier victories also sent Andrey Rublev, Marta Kostyuk, Alex de Minaur and Karolina Muchova into the last-32, while Germany’s Daniel Altmaier upset No. 8 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets. In doubles, 45-year-old Venus Williams earned her first Grand Slam victory since 2018, pairing with Canada’s Leylah Fernandez to topple sixth seeds Lyudmyla Kichenok and Ellen Perez 7-6 (4), 6-3. Williams hailed Fernandez as “the best partner I’ve ever played with outside Serena,” giving the home crowd a nostalgic highlight on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
