Turkey’s Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu has been fined 9,267 Turkish lira after a video he posted on social media showed him driving 225 kilometres per hour on the Ankara–Nigde highway, where the speed limit is 140 km/h. The footage, accompanied by the promotional hashtag #TurkeyAccelerates, unintentionally revealed the speedometer readings as the minister listened to folk music and clips of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s speeches. Uraloglu acknowledged the offence within hours, reposting the clip together with a copy of the penalty notice and stating that he had “effectively reported” himself. He said he had taken the wheel to inspect the highway and “briefly exceeded the limit without realising,” adding that adherence to speed restrictions is mandatory for everyone and pledging greater caution in future. The incident has drawn widespread criticism online, underscoring public sensitivity to road-safety standards in Turkey. While the fine—about US$225—represents a minor financial penalty for a cabinet minister, opposition lawmakers and social-media users argued the behaviour undermines government road-safety campaigns. The ministry has not announced any additional disciplinary measures.
