The Beverly Hills Unified School District’s Board of Education has voted 3–2 to require Israeli flags to be displayed on every campus and district facility during Jewish American Heritage Month in May, according to a statement summarised by the Los Angeles Times. The resolution also directs schools to expand lessons on Jewish history and to observe Holocaust Remembrance Day, International Holocaust Remembrance Day and 7 October as a day of remembrance for the 2023 Hamas-led attacks on Israel. Supporters framed the measure as a response to a surge in antisemitic incidents nationwide, citing Anti-Defamation League data showing U.S. incidents rose to 9,354 in 2024, the highest on record. Opponents argued the display of a foreign national flag in public schools conflates Jewish identity with Israeli government policy and could endanger students or alienate Palestinian and other communities. Board President Rachelle Marcus and member Amanda Stern cast the dissenting votes, voicing concerns about student safety and the appropriateness of partisan symbols on taxpayer-funded campuses. District officials said the flags will be mounted inside school grounds rather than flown from flagpoles. Implementation details are expected to be finalised ahead of Jewish American Heritage Month next spring.
