Newly released data from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), as highlighted by Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, reveals that the Biden administration placed over 11,000 unaccompanied migrant children with sponsors who were not properly vetted. Specifically, 11,488 children were placed with adults who were neither parents nor legal guardians and who had not undergone fingerprinting or completed background checks. This occurred during the period from October 2020 to September 2024, a timeframe in which the southern border was described as ungoverned. The data also indicates that more than 70,000 children were in the U.S. without their parents during this period, many of whom were placed with sponsors lacking adequate vetting. The HHS, under Secretary Xavier Becerra’s successor, Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’s leadership, is now reportedly implementing a whole-of-government approach to address these issues and improve oversight of migrant child placements.
