CNN Correspondent’s Rifle Claim Draws Firearms-Expert Backlash

CNN is facing criticism after senior justice correspondent Evan Perez incorrectly stated on air that a semi-automatic rifle can "shoot dozens of bullets in just one trigger pull." Firearms experts note that, by definition, a semi-automatic weapon discharges only one round each time the trigger is pulled. Commentators across several outlets said the remark, made during CNN’s coverage of an apparent tragedy at a Catholic church in Minneapolis, misinforms viewers about how commonly owned firearms function and could distort public debate over gun policy. CNN has not yet responded publicly to the complaints.

"These things can shoot dozens of bullets in just one trigger pull," claims CNN's Senior Justice Correspondent. These are low IQ people making low IQ content for low IQ people. https://t.co/UQaQMQn3Qj

🚨 WTF? CNN just had some doofus on claiming a semi-automatic rifle can sho*t "DOZENS of bullets in just ONE TRIGGER PULL" in reaction to the Catholic Church tragedy in Minneapolis. CNN, WTF ARE YOU DOING? A tragedy happens and the reaction is to LIE in favor of gun control? https://t.co/cwPJ2hss9V

🚨BREAKING: CNN is lying AGAIN. Evan Perez says that a semi-automatic rifle can "shoot dozens of bullets in just one trigger pull." This is absolutely FALSE. CNN is fear-mongering at the expense of children's lives. https://t.co/jE6b9BHtmp
