Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said a multi-agency immigration sweep in the state’s Panhandle has led to the arrest of more than 200 undocumented migrants since it began earlier this week. The "first-of-its-kind" Panhandle Immigration Enforcement Operation is being led by the Florida Highway Patrol in coordination with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and other federal partners, DeSantis told reporters in Panama City Friday. State officials described the detainees as including fugitives who had skipped immigration court hearings and individuals previously deported who re-entered the country. DeSantis said additional arrests are expected as the operation continues, adding that the effort underscores his administration’s commitment to “secure our interior and protect our citizens” by expanding state participation in federal immigration enforcement.
