The U.S. Department of Education on Friday said George Mason University violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act by factoring race into faculty hiring and promotion decisions. Investigators found the public institution in northern Virginia used so-called diversity, equity and inclusion criteria in ways that the agency deemed discriminatory. The department has given the university 10 days to propose a plan to “voluntarily resolve” the violations or risk enforcement actions that could include the loss of federal funding. The findings come amid a broader Trump administration effort to roll back race-conscious policies on campuses nationwide.
