The Federal Aviation Administration has opened an investigation into a near-collision last Friday between a SkyWest Airlines Embraer ERJ-175, operating as Delta Connection Flight 3788, and a U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress near Minot International Airport in North Dakota. The regional jet, which had departed Minneapolis with passengers bound for Minot, was cleared to land but executed an abrupt go-around when the bomber appeared on a converging course. Flight-tracking data show the aircraft climbing from roughly 2,200 feet to 4,150 feet before looping back for a safe landing. The B-52 had been conducting a sanctioned fly-over of the nearby North Dakota State Fair, the Air Force said, adding that it is also reviewing the event. The Minot control tower, operated by a private contractor rather than FAA personnel, provides visual—rather than radar—separation. Representative Betty McCollum of Minnesota called the incident “highly concerning” and urged the installation of full radar coverage at the airport. The episode comes amid heightened scrutiny of U.S. air-traffic safety following a series of recent military-civilian close calls.
