The U.S. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has opened an investigation into the Wikimedia Foundation, seeking records on how the nonprofit handles alleged foreign-backed campaigns to skew Wikipedia content. In a letter dated Aug. 27, Chairman James Comer and Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovation Chairwoman Nancy Mace asked Wikimedia CEO Maryana Iskander for documents detailing the identification and discipline of editors accused of violating platform policies. Lawmakers said recent analyses, including a report by the Anti-Defamation League, suggest coordinated efforts to insert antisemitic and anti-Israel narratives into Wikipedia articles and to influence U.S. public opinion. A separate study cited by the committee described attempts by hostile nation-state actors to expose Western readers to pro-Kremlin and anti-Western messaging, content that is also being ingested by artificial-intelligence systems that rely on Wikipedia as a data source. The committee said the probe aims to assess whether Wikimedia’s safeguards are sufficient and to "restore its credibility as a neutral arbiter of information." The foundation confirmed receipt of the request and said it welcomes the chance to address the panel’s questions. No timetable for delivering the documents has been announced.
