U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have detained two school-age children in separate incidents in Los Angeles and New York City, underscoring an escalation in the second Trump administration’s immigration crackdown. The arrests include Dayra, a 7-year-old Ecuadorian student at P.S. 89 in Queens, who was taken into custody with her mother during a routine immigration check-in at 26 Federal Plaza. Advocates say the pair were transferred to the South Texas Family Residential Center, while the girl’s 19-year-old brother was moved to a New Jersey facility. On the West Coast, agents in Los Angeles seized Benjamin Guerrero-Cruz, an 18-year-old senior at Reseda Charter High School, while he was walking his dog. Guerrero-Cruz, who helps care for three younger siblings, was taken by masked officers who left the dog tied to a tree, according to witnesses cited in local media reports. Local officials and immigrant-rights groups condemned the operations, calling for the immediate release of the detainees and an end to arrests that involve minors. New York City Councilman Shekar Krishnan said his office is working with school and federal authorities to reunite Dayra with her family. The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, has not responded to requests for comment.
