Jacksonville Mayor Deegan vetoed a bill that would have required the disclosure of illegal aliens residing in city-controlled public housing. The Jacksonville City Council attempted to override the veto but failed, allowing the mayor's veto to stand. The Florida GOP criticized Mayor Deegan's decision and urged the council to override the veto, but the effort was unsuccessful. Meanwhile, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis vetoed several bills and budget items, including a pilot program to install air conditioners in Miami-Dade prisons, public radio and television funding, and a bill aimed at limiting corruption in office. DeSantis also approved payments totaling approximately $4.6 million to families and individuals, including a $1.7 million payment to the family of a recreational leader who drowned in a Miami Beach pool, $1.7 million to a Broward man wrongly imprisoned for 34 years, and $1.2 million to a Pasco man maimed in a school bus crash. Florida TaxWatch praised $56 million in budget vetoes by DeSantis but noted other cuts were missed.
