Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has appointed Republican State Senator Jay Collins as the state's new lieutenant governor, filling the post after it had been vacant for months. Collins, a decorated former Army Green Beret with 23 years of service, has been recognized for his leadership in disaster relief efforts, including evacuations during the Israel-Iran conflict. DeSantis praised Collins as "the Chuck Norris of Florida politics," highlighting his resilience and conservative achievements as one of the most productive senators in recent Florida history. Collins was first elected to represent Tampa and East Hillsborough County in November 2022, defeating incumbent Democrat Janet Cruz. The appointment was officially announced at a press conference in Tampa and followed by Collins being sworn in as lieutenant governor. This move positions Collins as a potential frontrunner in the 2026 Florida gubernatorial race, with speculation about a contest against Byron Donalds. DeSantis, who is term-limited and will not seek re-election, emphasized Collins's dedication to conservative priorities and his ability to support the Trump agenda. With Collins's appointment, Florida now has both a governor and lieutenant governor who are military veterans. The lieutenant governor position was previously held by Jeanette Nuñez, who left to become president of Florida International University.
