Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of Theranos, will remain in prison after the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld her fraud conviction. The court affirmed the entirety of her conviction, which includes an 11-year prison sentence and a restitution order of $452 million. Holmes was convicted in 2022 for defrauding investors by making false claims about her company's blood-testing technology, which purportedly could analyze various human conditions with very small blood samples. The appeals court found that Holmes and her former partner Ramesh 'Sunny' Balwani did not demonstrate any legal missteps during their trial. Over 100,000 tests conducted by Theranos in Arizona were voided or corrected due to inaccuracies in the company's claims.
