The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is facing congressional efforts, primarily led by Republicans, to rescind billions of dollars in federal funding allocated for its electric vehicle (EV) fleet initiative. This comes approximately one year after the USPS announced a $9.6 billion investment plan to electrify its delivery fleet over five years. Despite this commitment, as of June 2025, only 6.8% of the USPS delivery fleet consists of electric vehicles. Critics, including some congressional Republicans, have characterized the program as a failure and are pushing to halt further funding. This development parallels challenges in other federally funded electric vehicle projects, such as the Biden administration's $159 million contract awarded to Canadian electric bus manufacturer Lion Electric for 435 school buses between 2022 and 2024. Lion Electric has since declared bankruptcy and failed to deliver the buses, leading some school districts to revert to diesel buses due to repair issues with the electric fleet.
