Pope Leo XIV has intensified the Vatican’s climate advocacy, warning in a message for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation that the planet is “falling into ruin” as human-driven climate change accelerates extreme weather and ecological devastation. He linked environmental degradation to social injustice, saying the poorest communities bear the brunt of deforestation, pollution and biodiversity loss. Building on the appeal, the Pope has approved a new liturgy titled “Missa pro custodia creationis” (Mass for the Care of Creation). Drafted by the Dicasteries for Integral Human Development and Divine Worship, the rite joins the Roman Missal’s section for civil needs and is intended to foster prayer for environmental stewardship. Cardinal Michael Czerny said the Mass would be used worldwide and confirmed that Leo XIV will celebrate it privately on 9 July at Castel Gandolfo. The measures extend the ecological agenda launched by Pope Francis’s 2015 encyclical “Laudato Si’” and come amid record heat across Europe. They underscore Leo XIV’s intention to make climate action a hallmark of his nascent pontificate while appealing for what he called an urgent convergence of faith, justice and environmental responsibility.
