SpAItial, a European AI startup founded in 2024 by Matthias Niessner, Luke Rogers, Ricardo Martin-Brualla, and David Novotny, has emerged from stealth with a $13 million seed funding round led by Earlybird Venture Capital and joined by Speedinvest and over 200 angel investors, including Robin Rombach, Victor Riparbelli, Steffen Tjerrild, Christian Stiebner, Edward Grefenstette, Maximilian Odendahl, Jon Barron, Rahul Garg, Sergej Epp, Elias Schneider, and Paul Whitehead. The company is developing Spatial Foundation Models (SFMs), a new class of AI models that generate and reason about interactive, physics-consistent 3D environments from text or minimal input. The technology operates directly on 3D structures, enabling the creation of photorealistic and interactive virtual worlds with accurate physics and temporal consistency, as demonstrated in a teaser video showing a 3D room generated from a text prompt. SpAItial's founding team brings experience from Synthesia, Google, Meta, and Cazoo. The company aims to make 3D world creation accessible to non-specialists, with potential applications in gaming (a $281.77 billion market), robotics and digital twins (projected at $219.6 billion), AR/VR, and industrial automation. SpAItial plans to license its foundation model to developers and will use the funding to expand its team and accelerate development of its first-generation SFMs.
