On August 22, 2025, a widespread power outage occurred in Caracas and several Venezuelan states including Miranda, La Guaira, Aragua, Nueva Esparta, Zulia, and Carabobo following intense rainfall. The blackout was caused by an electrical failure at the El Junquito substation, which also disrupted the Caracas Metro service. Corpoelec deployed technical personnel to restore electricity, and the metro service was reinstated later that evening. In subsequent days, multiple tragedies linked to electrical infrastructure and natural hazards were reported. In Baruta, Miranda state, a grandmother and her 12-year-old grandson died after a high-voltage power line fell on them. Additionally, three young individuals drowned near a river in San Gerónimo de Guayabal, Guárico state; two of them were children of a Civil Protection official. Reports also indicated ongoing electricity service disruptions in Caracas and the states of Lara, Bolívar, Miranda, Mérida, Guárico, and Nueva Esparta as of August 25.
