Heavy rains on 22 August triggered a failure at the El Junquito electrical substation, cutting power to large parts of Caracas and at least six surrounding states, according to state utility Corpoelec. The outage began shortly after 1:30 p.m. local time and plunged central districts such as Catia, Chacao, Baruta and San Bernardino into darkness. Service disruptions extended to Miranda, La Guaira, Aragua, Nueva Esparta, Zulia and Carabobo, while the Caracas Metro suspended operations. Corpoelec said crews were working to restore electricity but offered no timetable. The incident is the most extensive blackout since August 2024, when a nationwide outage lasted roughly 15 hours.
