Sony-published shooter Helldivers 2 became available on Xbox Series X|S today, more than a year after its debut on PlayStation 5 and PC. The reciprocal launch coincided with Microsoft’s Gears of War Reloaded reaching PlayStation 5, underscoring the companies’ widening embrace of cross-platform publishing. The fresh release, paired with a Halo 3: ODST-themed content pack, propelled Helldivers 2 to the top-selling spot on Steam in the United States. Valve’s platform recorded a peak of about 114,000 simultaneous players, while Arrowhead Game Studios said participation exceeded 200,000 across consoles and PC — the game’s highest total since June. Arrowhead outlined a pipeline of additions designed to keep the momentum. A free update titled “Into the Unjust,” due 2 September, will send squads into subterranean Terminid hive worlds, add escort and demolition missions, and introduce new bug variants such as Bile Spewers and Chargers. A paid “Dust Devils” Warbond follows on 4 September, bringing the AR-2 Coyote incendiary rifle, a cluster-frag G-7 Pineapple grenade and other stratagems. The twin launches and upcoming content suggest Sony and Microsoft are prepared to extend their cooperation beyond isolated projects, potentially broadening the reach of future first-party franchises on rival hardware.
