Veteran game designer Ron Gilbert premiered the first trailer for his next title, “Death by Scrolling,” during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live showcase on 19 August. The pixel-art project is being published by MicroProse and is now available to wishlist on Steam, although a launch date has not been announced. Billed as a vertically auto-scrolling roguelike RPG, the game drops players into Purgatory, where a relentless upward-moving screen and Death herself force continuous movement. Up to five selectable heroes, each with unique perks, fight underworld monsters while collecting gold and power-up cards; reaching 10,000 gold lets players pay the Ferryman and escape the afterlife. Gilbert began prototyping the title in 2019 but paused development to finish “Return to Monkey Island.” He revived the concept with a small team after shelving a separate open-world project he deemed too ambitious. Gilbert says the new version strips the design back to the fun core he first envisioned, adding progression systems, quests and challenges without over-complicating play.
Life is actually a video game. Childhood = tutorial School = side quest nobody asked for Job = grind mode Taxes = DLC scam Depression = difficulty setting Death = uninstall
