April 2024 saw a 3% decline in total U.S. video game market spending compared to the previous year, dropping to $4.1 billion. This decline was driven by a 43% decrease in hardware sales and a 4% dip in accessories, despite a 2% increase in content spending. Notably, PS5 hardware sales are trending 8% ahead of PS4, while Xbox Series is trailing Xbox One by 13%. Sony has outperformed Microsoft in console sales, with the PS5 leading the market by a significant margin. Sony also reported that the PS5 is its most profitable generation to date and is looking to expand its reach through new devices and peripherals. Half of PlayStation’s monthly active console users remain on the PS4, indicating its continued importance to Sony’s business strategy. According to Circana, video game sales fell to $1.4 billion in April.
