Sudan is facing a severe cholera outbreak with over 100,000 reported cases and 2,470 deaths nationwide, particularly affecting Darfur and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps. The crisis has been exacerbated by attacks from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have also targeted key locations such as hospitals. In the besieged city of El-Fasher in North Darfur, the RSF shelled South Hospital for three consecutive days, resulting in at least one death and multiple injuries. Additionally, the RSF abducted six women and two children from a displacement camp in El-Fasher. Fighting since 2023 has caused approximately 61,000 deaths and displaced 12 million people across Sudan. Despite ongoing conflict, about 1.3 million displaced individuals have returned to their homes by mid-2025, with an estimated 2.1 million expected to return by the end of the year. In July alone, around 500,074 people returned to Khartoum, marking a 400% increase from June, as the city begins recovery efforts to restore services and rebuild amidst significant funding shortages. However, the situation remains precarious, with the RSF recently seizing large parts of the Abu Shouk IDP camp in El-Fasher, raising concerns about a potential genocide and the possible fall of the city without external intervention. The United Nations has confirmed the spread of cholera in 18 states and warned of a humanitarian disaster in El-Fasher.
The risk of genocide is high in the city of El Fasher as resistance is crumbling. This weekend the RSF broke through in the north, seizing large parts of the Abu Shouk IDP camp. Local voices warn the city could fall if there is no intervention Sudan 🇸🇩 https://t.co/t9t7GRL02X
