Taiwan has incorporated the capital’s subway network into this year’s Han Kuang military exercises, the island’s largest annual war-games, which run 10–18 July. Soldiers from the Military Police Command and the Army’s Third Logistics Command were filmed riding empty Taipei Metro trains, moving munitions on service cars and practicing rapid deployment from station platforms while carrying FIM-92 Stinger missiles, machine guns and anti-armor rockets. The Ministry of National Defense said the drills are designed to test whether underground transport can serve as a hardened corridor for troops and supplies if China targets surface roads during a potential invasion. Troops also rehearsed missile launches from tunnel mouths and coordinated urban-combat tactics at station exits, underscoring the shift toward densely populated battle scenarios. This year’s Han Kuang exercise is the most extensive since the series began in 1984. About 22,000 reservists have been called up, and for the first time the civilian population will receive daily smartphone alerts instructing residents to conduct shelter-in-place and evacuation drills; fines may be imposed on those who ignore the warnings, Premier Cho Jung-tai said. The subway manoeuvres follow separate live-fire drills against amphibious landings around Taipei and the outlying Penghu islands. Taipei’s government and metro operator assisted in closing sections of the network for the exercise, which analysts say reflects growing concern that Beijing could be prepared to mount an assault on the self-ruled island as early as 2027.
