The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism’s 2025 Digital News Report, released on 17 June, finds that a growing share of the public—particularly people under 25—is turning to generative artificial-intelligence chatbots such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT to stay informed about day-to-day events. The study says conversational tools are now viewed as a convenient complement to, and in some cases a substitute for, traditional search engines and social-media feeds. Researchers warn that the shift could disrupt publisher traffic and advertising models, while raising questions about the transparency of AI-generated summaries and the reliability of their news sources. The report urges news organizations and regulators to focus on accuracy, disclosure and media-literacy initiatives as AI-driven platforms gain traction among the next generation of news consumers.
