Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee voted 20–8 on 9 July to summon Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira to explain President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s recent meeting with former Argentine president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. Because the measure is a formal summons rather than an invitation, Vieira is obliged to appear; the hearing date has not yet been set. Opposition lawmakers from the Novo party, who authored the request, argue that Lula’s 3 July visit to Kirchner—made after the Mercosur summit in Buenos Aires—was an ideological gesture that bypassed Argentina’s sitting president Javier Milei and ignored that Kirchner is serving a six-year corruption sentence under house arrest. They contend the encounter breached diplomatic norms and undermined Brazil’s credibility abroad. During the visit, Lula expressed solidarity with Kirchner, urging her to “keep fighting for justice.” Deputies also passed separate motions of censure against both Lula and Vieira, underscoring the political strain the episode has injected into Brazil’s foreign-policy debate.
