A group of right-wing Brazilian lawmakers intensified calls for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s impeachment on 9 July, posting near-simultaneous messages on social media that accused the government of "dictatorship" and blamed it for higher taxes and tariffs. Senator Flavio Bolsonaro and federal deputies Bia Kicis, Nikolas Ferreira, Helio Lopes and others repeated slogans such as “Tarifa do Lula” and “Taxa do Lula,” and rallied supporters under the hashtag #ImpeachmentDoLulaJá. The online campaign targets, among other measures, the 145% tariff on Chinese goods that came into force on 9 April, which critics say is stoking inflation. None of the lawmakers indicated they had filed a formal impeachment request in Congress, where ousting a president would require backing from two-thirds of the 513-seat Chamber of Deputies. The social-media blitz underscores the enduring polarization that has marked Brazilian politics since Lula defeated Jair Bolsonaro, Flavio Bolsonaro’s father, in the 2022 election. Lula retains a working majority through a broad coalition, and party leaders have so far dismissed the impeachment talk as political theater.
