Argentina’s governing coalition moved to contain a growing scandal on Monday after the release of audio recordings attributed to former National Disability Agency chief Diego Spagnuolo, in which he describes an alleged kickback scheme involving drug supplier Suizo Argentina S.A. and links the payments to presidential secretary Karina Milei and subsecretary of Institutional Management Eduardo “Lule” Menem. Speaking on television channel A24, Chamber of Deputies president Martín Menem rejected the authenticity of the recordings and insisted their content was “absolutely false.” “I put my hands in the fire for Lule and Karina,” he said, calling the leak a “political operation” orchestrated by the opposition two weeks before provincial elections. Lule Menem issued a similar statement on social media, denouncing what he described as a smear campaign by Kirchnerist opponents. Opposition legislators have requested that Karina Milei appear before Congress to explain the allegations, while Spagnuolo faces a judicial investigation following searches of his home in Nordelta and ANDIS offices. No criminal charges have been filed against the Milei administration officials, and the president has not commented publicly beyond reposting Martín Menem’s interview announcement.
