MercadoLibre Inc. said it will shut its software-development office in Córdoba and move its 1,260 employees to permanent remote work after concluding that local municipal taxes have become prohibitive. The e-commerce company disclosed it pays about ARS 770 million (roughly 24 times the monthly rent for the premises) in local levies, a burden it called “totally disproportionate” compared with similar operations elsewhere in Argentina. The amount represents 2.1% of the unit’s revenue, the firm added. President Juan Martín de la Serna said the decision followed months of talks with city officials and will not affect headcount or service levels. MercadoLibre continues to review longer-term location options but will keep its logistics and commercial activities in Córdoba unchanged.
