The Supreme Court of India has issued notices to the Bihar government and the Centre in response to a petition filed by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). The petition challenges a Patna High Court order that quashed the state government's amendments to increase reservations for Backward Classes, Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs), Scheduled Castes, and Scheduled Tribes in public employment and educational institutions from 50% to 65%. The High Court's decision, delivered on June 20, nullified the increased quotas. During a brief hearing, senior advocate P Wilson, representing the RJD, highlighted that 85% of Bihar's population falls under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. The Supreme Court has not stayed the High Court's order as of now.
