Binance founder and former CEO Changpeng Zhao said he has personally donated the equivalent of $10 million in the exchange’s BNB token to support Vitalik Buterin’s open-source biotech initiative. The contribution was made several months ago but only disclosed on 1 July in a social-media post in which Zhao described the gift as “just my little part.” Zhao added that the pledge is separate from investments made by his family office, YZi Labs, and that he has also provided private funding to projects focused on longevity research, vaccine development and virus detection. He framed the donations as a way to attract “mission-driven talent” to scientific research that relies on transparent, collaborative models similar to those used in open-source software. Buterin has been promoting open-source approaches to biotechnology, arguing that decentralized funding and data-sharing can accelerate medical breakthroughs. The fresh capital from Zhao increases the pool of crypto-backed resources available for the effort, though neither side has detailed a spending timeline or specific research targets.
