A group of recreational fishermen filmed an estimated 16- to 18-foot great white shark swimming close to their boat off the coast of La Jolla, near San Diego, over the weekend of 28–29 June, local media reported. The encounter was captured on video that shows the shark passing alongside the vessel before a sea lion appears to chase it away. Great white sharks are occasionally spotted in Southern California’s coastal waters, but the size of the animal and its proximity to the boat drew particular attention. No injuries or aggressive behavior were reported, and authorities have not issued any beach closures. Marine experts note that sightings, while relatively rare, can increase during the summer when the sharks follow prey closer to shore.
