Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, said it will discontinue redemptions and freeze remaining tokens on five legacy blockchains—Omni Layer, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS and Algorand—effective 1 September 2025. Users holding USDT on those networks are advised to redeem their tokens or migrate them to a supported chain before that date. The company described the move as part of a strategic infrastructure review aimed at reallocating resources toward blockchains with greater volume, scalability and developer activity, including Layer-2 solutions such as the Lightning Network. “Sunsetting support for these legacy chains allows us to focus on platforms that offer greater scalability, developer activity, and community engagement,” Chief Executive Officer Paolo Ardoino said in a statement.
