Edgar Berlanga and Hamzah Sheeraz each scaled 167.6 pounds at Friday’s official weigh-in, confirming their WBC super-middleweight title eliminator that tops Saturday’s Ring III card in New York. The bout, to be staged at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Flushing Meadows, will determine the mandatory challenger to undisputed champion Canelo Álvarez. The fight marks Sheeraz’s debut at 168 pounds after moving up from middleweight and recovering from a broken hand suffered in February’s draw with Carlos Adames. Berlanga, looking to rebuild after last year’s decision loss to Álvarez, returned to winning ways with a first-round knockout of Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz in March. Undefeated WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson (23-0, 11 KOs) also made weight alongside Mexico’s William ‘Camarón’ Zepeda (33-0, 27 KOs) for the co-main event, Stevenson’s third title defence. The undercard features Alberto Puello versus Subriel Matias for Puello’s WBC super-lightweight belt, while Alycia Baumgardner and Jennifer Miranda both hit the 130-pound limit for a separate bout. Ring III is the first boxing show held at the 14,000-seat tennis venue, better known for the US Open. DAZN will stream the pay-per-view worldwide at US$59.99, with the main undercard starting 6 p.m. ET and Berlanga–Sheeraz ring walks expected around 9:55 p.m.
