The 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) on climate change is set to take place in Belém, Brazil, despite mounting concerns over high hotel prices in the city. Countries, particularly developing nations, have requested a relocation or more affordable accommodation options, as daily hotel rates in Belém have exceeded US$200, while some delegations seek rates around US$70. The Brazilian government and local authorities have acknowledged the issue and are exploring ways to reduce lodging costs but have firmly ruled out moving the event to another city. André Corrêa do Lago, president of COP30, emphasized that there is no alternative location, stating, "there is no plan B, the plan B is B for Belém." Tourism Minister Celso Sabino assured that the conference will proceed as planned and promised a "fair price" for accommodations, describing COP30 as "the largest and best COP the UN has ever seen." The event's executive director, Ana Toni, noted the absence of Austria's president from the conference, attributed to the high accommodation costs. The choice of Belém, near the mouth of the Amazon River, also highlights tensions as Brazil's national oil company plans a controversial offshore exploration campaign in the region. Some voices have suggested transferring parts of the event to Rio de Janeiro to alleviate the crisis, but the government remains committed to Belém as the sole host city.
