Brazilian congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro told the Financial Times that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing a new round of penalties aimed at officials of Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court, including Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who oversees the coup-plot investigation against former president Jair Bolsonaro. Eduardo Bolsonaro said options being evaluated range from broader visa revocations to asset freezes and additional trade measures. The disclosure follows Washington’s imposition of human-rights sanctions on Moraes last week and the United States’ 10% across-the-board tariff on Brazilian imports that took effect in April. Eduardo Bolsonaro, who has been lobbying in Washington, said he also plans to seek European support for similar sanctions if the court does not halt the trial of his father. The prospect of tougher U.S. action drew criticism in Brasília. Chamber of Deputies Speaker Hugo Motta said no lawmaker should work abroad for measures that harm Brazil’s economy, while Finance Minister Fernando Haddad argued that the dispute stems from “antidiplomacy” by domestic political forces rather than a breakdown in bilateral dialogue. Haddad added that the government is preparing a package to shield Brazilian companies from the impact of existing and potential U.S. trade restrictions.
