A juvenile Magellanic penguin was observed swimming among beachgoers at Praia do Arpoador in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in early July 2025. This penguin, native to the Patagonian region of southern Argentina and Chile, appeared to have deviated from its usual migratory route, possibly following fish or influenced by ocean currents and prey scarcity. The sighting attracted local attention, with experts advising the public to avoid physical contact and to notify specialized rescue teams. Concurrently, over 40 Magellanic penguins were found stranded and dead along the northern coast of São Paulo state within a week, prompting rescue efforts and rehabilitation for surviving birds at a marine animal care center in Guarujá. These events highlight unusual penguin movements along Brazil's southeastern coastline, likely linked to environmental factors affecting their migration.
