An 11-year-old tourist, Bianca Zanella from Curitiba, died after falling roughly 70 metres from a lookout at the Cânion Fortaleza in the Parque Nacional da Serra Geral, Cambará do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, on 10 July. Rescue teams located her body about ten hours later, around 23:00, aided by a drone equipped with a thermal camera. The park’s administration closed the site on 11 July and said it is cooperating with a Police Civil inquiry into the accident. Local officials noted that the viewing area lacks protective fencing. Bianca had been visiting the canyon with her parents and two younger siblings when the fall occurred. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva used social media on 11 July to extend “profound solidarity” to the girl’s family and to acknowledge the efforts of emergency personnel involved in the search and recovery.
