Rio Tinto reported a 13% sequential increase in iron ore shipments in the second quarter of 2025, reaching 79.9 million tonnes on a 100% basis. Its Pilbara iron ore production rose to 83.7 million tonnes, marking the highest quarterly output since 2018. Copper production also improved, with consolidated output reaching 229,000 tonnes, a 15% year-on-year increase in the April-June period. The company has accelerated the first shipment from its Simandou project. This recovery in iron ore shipments follows disruptions caused by cyclones earlier in the year, and the commodity price has recently hit $100 per ton. Meanwhile, Australia's Port Hedland, the country's largest bulk-export terminal, recorded a new iron ore export high of 54.6 million tons in June, with year-to-date shipments totaling 288 million tons, surpassing previous half-year records. In related mining news, Vale reported a 4% increase in iron ore production in the second quarter, driven by a record output at its largest Brazilian mine. Fortescue also posted a 4% rise in iron ore shipments in the fourth quarter compared to the previous year. On the copper front, Teck Resources lowered its 2025 copper production guidance for its Quebrada Blanca mine to between 210,000 and 230,000 tonnes from an earlier range of 230,000 to 270,000 tonnes, citing delays related to the development of a Tailings Management Facility. Anglo American reported second-quarter copper production of 173,300 tonnes, down 11% year-on-year, with higher output from Quellaveco offset by planned reductions at Chilean mines Collahuasi and Los Bronces. However, Anglo American's copper production increased sequentially from the first quarter.
