Susanne Bial, a German-born psychoanalyst who became known to Brazilian audiences as the mother of journalist and television host Pedro Bial, died on 4 July at the Clínica São Vicente in Rio de Janeiro. She was 101 and had been hospitalised for a week, according to local media. Pedro Bial announced the death on social media, calling her life “vividíssima, de muita luta, muita alegria, muito prazer, encontro e escuta.” No cause of death was disclosed. Born in Berlin on 3 July 1924, Susanne Brückmann emigrated with her family to Brazil in 1934 to escape Nazism. She trained as a psychoanalyst, married advertising executive Pedro Hans Israel Bial and raised three children, including the television presenter and the basketball coach Alberto Bial. Despite a low public profile, she occasionally appeared on Brazilian television to support her son and was praised for her longevity and intellectual curiosity. Her centenary was celebrated in 2024 with the Globoplay documentary “Oma,” directed by grandson José Bial, which recounts her experiences spanning pre-war Germany, exile in South America and a long career in mental health. Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.
