U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 50% tariff on copper imports and a 50% duty on goods from Brazil, both set to take effect on August 1, 2025. The tariff on copper aims to boost domestic production of this metal, which is critical for electric vehicles, military hardware, the power grid, and various consumer goods. The tariff on Brazilian goods appears motivated by political reasons, specifically in response to Brazil's treatment of former President Jair Bolsonaro. Despite the U.S. having a trade surplus with Brazil, Trump criticized the investigation into Bolsonaro as a "witch hunt." A study by the Brazilian National Confederation of Industry (CNI) projects that these tariffs could reduce Brazil's GDP by 0.16%, equivalent to nearly 20 billion Brazilian reais, while also potentially causing a 0.37% decline in the U.S. GDP. The CNI indicated that the economic impact of these tariffs on the U.S. economy may be more severe than on Brazil or China. Earlier in 2025, Trump had imposed 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports in March, doubling them to 50% in June, marking an escalation in his global tariff policies.
