A gang of Bulgarian fraudsters has been jailed for orchestrating the largest benefit fraud scheme in the UK, defrauding the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) of over £54 million. The scam involved creating bogus tenancy agreements, counterfeit payslips, and forged landlord letters to claim Universal Credit. The operation, which siphoned off £200 million a year, was uncovered after a Bulgarian police officer noticed criminals in his city living lavishly and reported it to British authorities. The fraudsters set up 'benefit factories' to hijack 6,000 identities and make fraudulent claims, with some individuals receiving up to £2,500 a month. Galina Nikolova, one of the perpetrators, and others have been jailed for a combined 25 years. The DWP has since launched a crackdown on benefit fraud and fraudulent activity within the system.
