The BBC released its annual report for the year to 31 March 2025, showing former “Match of the Day” presenter Gary Lineker remained the corporation’s highest-paid on-air talent for an eighth straight year with earnings of about £1.35 million. Lineker left the broadcaster in May, making this the last time he will top the list. Radio 2 host Zoe Ball was the highest-paid woman at roughly £515,000, while football pundit Alan Shearer moved into third place on about £440,000 after an increase linked to Euro 2024 coverage. Incoming “Match of the Day” anchor Mark Chapman earned about £325,000, more than £1 million less than his predecessor, underscoring continuing pay disparities. Within BBC News, Nick Robinson and Fiona Bruce became the top-paid journalists following Huw Edwards’ departure, each earning between £410,000 and £415,000. The report shows 50 on-air journalists exceeded the £178,000 disclosure threshold, up from 46 the previous year. Director-General Tim Davie said the broadcaster is implementing a two-year programme to improve workplace culture after what he called the “appalling” revelations surrounding Edwards and other misconduct cases. The BBC cut headcount by 10 % during the year and remains on track to deliver £700 million in savings by 2028. Total licence-fee income rose £200 million to £3.84 billion, and commercial revenue reached £2.16 billion. The report said 94 % of UK adults used at least one BBC service each month in 2024/25, highlighting the organisation’s continued reach even as it faces financial and reputational pressures.
