Ozzy Osbourne gave what he says will be his final live performance on Saturday, reuniting the original members of Black Sabbath for a one-off “Back to the Beginning” festival at Villa Park in his hometown of Birmingham. About 40,000 fans filled the football stadium to watch the 76-year-old singer, who has Parkinson’s disease, front the band alongside guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward for the first time in two decades. Seated on a black, bat-shaped throne, Osbourne began with a five-song solo set before Black Sabbath joined him for classics including “War Pigs,” “Iron Man” and a closing rendition of “Paranoid.” The all-day event, organised as a charity fundraiser, also featured performances by Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Slayer and other rock stalwarts. The concert’s musical director, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, billed it as “the greatest day in the history of heavy metal.” “You have no idea how I feel. Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Osbourne told the crowd, acknowledging the six years he spent largely offstage because of ill-health. While he has ruled out further touring, the singer has indicated he may still record in the studio. Saturday’s show, however, marked the end of an era for the group widely credited with inventing heavy metal nearly six decades ago.
