A Scottish paramedic has been jailed for 10 years and six months for secretly administering an abortion-inducing drug to his pregnant lover, causing her to miscarry. Stephen Doohan, 33, was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow after earlier pleading guilty to sexual assault and to inserting the medication without the woman’s knowledge or consent. The court heard that Doohan, a clinical team leader with the Scottish Ambulance Service, met the woman on holiday in Spain in 2021 and began a long-distance relationship while still married. When the woman informed him of her pregnancy, she travelled to his Edinburgh flat on 17 March 2023. During consensual sex, Doohan inserted misoprostol into her vagina; the following day he gave her diazepam as she suffered cramps. She later collapsed and hospital staff confirmed a miscarriage. An internal ambulance-service probe, triggered by the woman’s complaint in May 2023, uncovered Doohan’s workplace search for abortion drugs three days after he learned of the pregnancy. Judge Lord Colbeck told Doohan he had inflicted “long-term psychological injury” and imposed an indefinite non-harassment order. Doohan has been suspended and is no longer employed by the ambulance service.
