Storm Floris lashed Scotland and parts of northern Britain on Monday, delivering wind gusts that reached 90 mph and prompting an amber weather warning from the UK Met Office. The storm uprooted trees, damaged overhead lines and triggered power cuts and transport disruptions across much of the region. Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks said it had restored service to around 50,000 customers but 22,000 households were still without electricity as of 08:00 on Tuesday. The utility has dispatched roughly 500 engineers, supplemented by crews from less-affected areas, and expects most customers to be reconnected by late Tuesday, with harder-to-reach repairs stretching into Thursday. SSEN is offering meal reimbursements of up to £30 per person per day and operating welfare vans that provide hot food and drinks. Rail and air travel were heavily affected. Network Rail recorded 119 incidents—75 linked to fallen trees—forcing speed restrictions and line closures; ScotRail, London North Eastern Railway and Avanti West Coast all curtailed services to Scotland. Aviation analytics firm Cirium counted at least 68 flight cancellations, while ferries and several major road bridges closed to high-sided vehicles. Cultural and sporting events were also hit: the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and more than 100 Edinburgh Fringe shows were called off. The Met Office allowed its amber warning to expire late Monday as Floris moved into the North Sea toward Norway, leaving Britain with blustery showers and brisk north-westerly winds. Forecasters cautioned, however, that another spell of unseasonably wet and windy weather is likely to reach north-western parts of the UK late Wednesday into Thursday.
