Separate electrical faults left more than 17,000 utility customers without power in Colorado and Utah on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, according to the affected companies. Poudre Valley REA said a “transmission line event” cut electricity to about 13,000 customers across Larimer and Weld counties in northern Colorado shortly after 8:40 p.m. local time on Wednesday. Crews were dispatched, but the cooperative did not immediately provide an estimate for full restoration. In Taylorsville, Utah, Rocky Mountain Power reported that a squirrel triggered a blown fuse and fried a circuit breaker around 6:55 a.m. Thursday, knocking out service to roughly 4,447 customers. The utility aimed to complete repairs and restore power by about 10 a.m. MT, though some households were still waiting as of 8:30 a.m. Both utilities said crews are working “as quickly and safely as possible” to restore electricity and urged customers to monitor outage maps and text alerts for updates.
